Map 1: The Meandering River

Walk the river and pick up rocks. Rarer rocks hide in the places real rivers drop them: heavy minerals on the gravel point bars inside the bends, fossils and petrified wood falling out of the cut banks, and the occasional thing from outer space out on the floodplain.

Riffles are shallow and fast. The pools on the outside of bends are deep, and the current will carry you downstream.
